A history full of heart and tradition

The Berghotel Jägerhof looks back on an eventful and traditional past. For over 80 years, the hotel has not only shaped the region, but also the hearts of its guests. Nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Allgäu, the Jägerhof has been a place of encounter, retreat and inspiration since its foundation.

From the first days as a charming mountain hotel to today's modern oasis of well-being - each chapter tells of dedication, vision and a deep connection to the Allgäu way of life. Characterized by warm hospitality, the hotel has become a place where memories are made and tradition remains alive.

1937

From farm to guesthouse

The Rummel family sells the farm building on the Menelzhofer Berg to the Klein family. They transformed the farm into a cozy guesthouse with an inviting mountain restaurant - the foundation for unforgettable stays in the midst of the Allgäu countryside.

1938 - 1951

From ashes to popular retreat

In 1938, the Jägerhof was destroyed by a devastating fire. However, the owners at the time were not discouraged and immediately began to rebuild. The new building was almost completed by 1940.

In 1941, the Dornier company took over the Jägerhof and used it as a "Gefolgschaftsheim". After the end of the Second World War, Paul Madlener acquired the hotel in 1949 - still with Reichsmarks. But the joy was short-lived, because in 1951 the Jägerhof was confiscated by the French occupying forces.

Despite these challenges, the Madlener family, supported by their daughter Mrs. Hartwig, continued to run the hotel. Thanks to their commitment, the Jägerhof developed into a popular retreat for guests seeking relaxation and nature in the Allgäu Alps.

1976 -1980

The new beginning under Helmut Aurenz

In 1976, the Jägerhof is put up for sale following the death of Paul Madlener and his daughter. Helmut Aurenz, a 39-year-old entrepreneur who already knew the hotel as a guest, took over the hotel on May 1 of the same year. He originally planned to buy it as a retirement home, but his vision led to a comprehensive modernization of the hotel.

During a lengthy renovation phase, numerous innovations were implemented: a spacious reception hall with an open fireplace was created, each room was given its own shower and toilet, the terrace was extended and a sauna and tennis court were added to the existing swimming pool.

In 1978, the first "Isny Runde" took place - a meeting of personalities from politics and business that established the Jägerhof as a place of exchange. Just one year later, 35 rooms were furnished in a rustic country house style, which emphasized the charm of the house. In 1980, another milestone followed: joining the renowned Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a sign of excellent hospitality and cuisine.

Helmut Aurenz's vision laid the foundation for the development of the Jägerhof into a modern hotel steeped in tradition.

1980 - 1990

Growth and change in the 1980s

In 1980, the Jägerhof became a member of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a sign of excellent hospitality. 1984 saw a major expansion: the number of rooms increased from 35 to 69, new conference rooms (Altmann/Säntis) were created and the reception moved into the new building. The former reception hall was converted into a fireside lounge, and the tennis court found a new location on the edge of the forest.

In 1986, the country house was integrated into the Jägerhof as a vacation home. A highlight in 1988 was Chancellor Helmut Kohl's speech at the 10th Isny Runde - a milestone in the history of the house.

1990 - 2000

Big steps into a new decade

In 1991, the next hotel expansion was prepared with the construction of the Pavilion, a 130 m² event and seminar room. 1992 saw the fireplace room transformed into a cozy fireplace bar, which opened its doors just in time for Christmas.

After seven years of planning and approval procedures, a comprehensive renovation and expansion began in 1996. By December of the same year, 35 studios and suites, a spacious reception hall with store and open fireplace, the Jägerhof spa with sauna and bathing area, as well as the expansion of the restaurant to include the Schwarzer Grat and Iberg rooms had been created. The kitchen was also tripled in size, the terrace enlarged and the old reception turned into a beauty salon. New parking spaces rounded off the offer.

In 1997, a game reserve with red and fallow deer was created below the terrace, a highlight for nature lovers. Further modernizations followed until 1999: The Jägerzimmer and the Isny-Stube were given a fresh design, a third parking level was built and the kitchen was given a covered delivery area.

The 1990s marked a phase of change and innovation that further consolidated the Jägerhof as a modern hotel with heart.

2000 - 2010

Progress and special moments

In 2000, the Jägerhof was almost completely renovated, except for the 2nd floor of the main building. There, 10 small attic rooms were converted into 4 spacious rooms and 2 suites with balcony. One year later, 2001, the Jägerhof-Therme was extended with a bio-sauna to offer guests even more opportunities to relax.

In 2009, the country house just 50 meters away underwent a complete renovation and was transformed into modern, cosy accommodation for guests. A special highlight followed in 2010 when German Chancellor Angela Merkel was a guest at the Isny Runde for the second time and created a unique atmosphere at the Jägerhof.

The 2000s were characterized by constant modernization and at the same time brought special moments that enriched the history of the house.

2010 - 2020

Change and anniversaries

In 2011, Federal President Christian Wulff gave an important speech at the annual Isny Runde. A year later, another chapter of development began: after the "Jägerhof" development plan was approved, the old tennis court was demolished to make room for the new barn. Initially used as a storage area for wood, the rustic barn quickly developed into a popular event location for weddings, family celebrations and corporate events.

In 2016, the Aurenz family celebrated their 40th anniversary at the Berghotel Jägerhof on 1 May, and in 2017 they looked back on 80 years of gastronomy on the Menelzhofer Berg. In the same year, the Jägerhof closed for two weeks for the first time in 40 years to carry out extensive renovations. The swimming pool was given a new inner skin, 8 comfortable rooms and the associated bathrooms were modernized. The restaurant also shone with new seating, a modern floor and a fresh color concept.

In 2018, a further 12 comfort rooms and 3 maisonettes were renovated, this time during ongoing operations. A special event followed in 2019: a generational change took place at the 40th Isny Runde, with Helmut Aurenz and Matthias Wissmann handing over the organization and moderation to Michaela Aurenz Maldonado and Thomas Strobl with their consulting team.

The 2010s stand for further development and the continuation of the traditions that make up the Jägerhof - always with an eye on the future.

2020 - 2023

Challenges and renewal

In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic brought major challenges for the Jägerhof. The hotel had to close from March to June and was then only allowed to reopen under strict conditions such as mandatory masks, disinfection and social distancing rules. During this time, many guests rediscovered the Allgäu as a safe vacation destination. However, another closure was ordered in November and it remained unclear when operations could be fully resumed.

The closure period was used to carry out extensive modernizations: The reception and lobby were given a new, modern design, while flooring in the restaurant, on the terrace and in the adjacent building was renewed. In mid-June 2021, the Jägerhof was finally able to welcome guests again - just in time for the much sought-after vacation season in the Allgäu. Due to social distancing regulations, the terrace was extended and a new terrace deck was built.

In spring 2022, the children's playground was redesigned, delighting younger guests with its modern play equipment. The hunting lodge was not only renovated, but completely rebuilt and presented itself as a cozy vacation home for up to four people just in time for the Christmas season. At the same time, the demolition of the fireplace bar began in summer, which was replaced by a modern bar by December, which was ceremoniously opened on 23.12.22. The children's playroom was also redesigned during this time.

The years 2020 to 2023 were characterized by adaptation and renewal, but they strengthened the Jägerhof and enriched it with new offers and a fresh, contemporary appearance.
